Why an anchor matters
Touch typing works because your fingers navigate by relative position. Every reach is calculated from a known starting point, and the home row is that reference. Without it, each keystroke becomes an absolute search rather than a short relative move.
This is why the home row is not merely a beginner's convention you outgrow. Fast typists return to it constantly, usually without noticing — it is the mechanism that makes accuracy at speed possible.
Finding it without looking
The F and J keys have raised bumps for exactly this purpose. Rest your index fingers on them and the rest of the position follows: left hand on A, S, D, F and right hand on J, K, L, semicolon.
You should be able to find this position from anywhere on the keyboard by feel alone, in one motion. If you find yourself looking to re-place your hands after reaching for a symbol, that is the specific habit to break.
Zones and the return reflex
Each finger owns a zone and returns home after every excursion. Left index reaches F, G, R, T, V and B; right index takes J, H, U, Y, M and N. Little fingers cover the outer columns, including shift and enter.
The return is the part people skip. Reaching for a bracket is fine; leaving your hand parked out there afterward is what causes the next three keystrokes to misfire.
Rebuilding the anchor
If your home row habit has decayed, spend a week on home-row-only material with your eyes fixed on the screen, typing slowly enough that every return is deliberate. This is dull and it works.
Then reintroduce reaches one row at a time, checking after each that your fingers come back. The goal is that the return happens without thought, so your attention stays on the text rather than on your hands.
Why the home row sits where it does
The layout is not ergonomic in origin — QWERTY was arranged for mechanical typewriters — but the home row convention that grew around it is sound for a simple reason: it puts eight fingers within one key of the most frequent letters in English, so most keystrokes need no travel at all.
That is also why alternative layouts deliver smaller gains than their advocates claim. The advantage of touch typing comes overwhelmingly from having a consistent reference position, and any layout gives you that.
Diagnosing an anchor that has drifted
A lost home row rarely announces itself. The symptom is a cluster of errors immediately after a reach — you type a bracket or a number correctly, then miss the next two letters, because your hand never came back.
The heatmap will show this as weakness on ordinary letters that you obviously know, which is the tell. If your worst keys include common home-row letters, the problem is not those keys; it is what happens before them.
