Beginner typing test

Short, clean snippets. Build muscle memory without the symbol soup.

function greet(name) { return "Hello, " + name + "!"; }

What to watch

  • F JThe bumped home keys. Find them by feel, never by sight.
  • ( )Shift-9 and shift-0, the first symbols worth automating.
  • ;Right little finger, unshifted — a gentle introduction to line endings.
  • =Assignment, on the right of the number row.

The only rule that matters here

Do not look at the keyboard. Not once. Every glance forces your eyes to refocus and then find your place again on screen, and it prevents the spatial map from forming — which is the entire point of this level.

Expect this to feel slow and frustrating for about a week. What you are building in that week is a mental model of where the keys are, and it only forms when sight is unavailable. Speed is a consequence of that model, not a substitute for it.

Anchor, reach, return

Rest your index fingers on the F and J bumps between words. Every reach is calculated from that position, and every reach ends by coming back to it. The return is the part people skip, and skipping it is why the next three keystrokes misfire.

At this level the snippets are deliberately short, so there are many returns per minute. That repetition is the training, even though it feels like the easy part.

Accuracy before pace, without exception

Aim for 98 percent accuracy and ignore your WPM entirely. Every error you type is a rehearsal of the wrong movement, and at this stage you are deciding which movements become automatic.

If your accuracy is below 95 percent, slow down until it is not. Speed built on accurate technique arrives quickly; speed built on inaccurate technique plateaus and then has to be unlearned.

When to move up

Move to intermediate when you can finish a snippet without looking down while holding accuracy above 97 percent — not when you hit a particular WPM. Speed at this level is a poor signal, because it can be reached simply by looking.

Most people are ready within two to three weeks of short daily sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I stay on beginner snippets?
Until you can complete one without looking at the keyboard while holding accuracy above 97 percent. For most people that is two to three weeks of short daily practice.
My speed dropped when I stopped looking. Is that normal?
Yes, and it is temporary. You have replaced an automatic habit with a deliberate one. The corrected technique has a far higher ceiling, which is why the short-term loss is worth taking.
Should I use the beginner level if I already type quickly?
If you type quickly by looking at the keyboard, yes. A fast hunt-and-peck typist plateaus well below a touch typist and has to rebuild eventually.
