How to improve your typing speed

A four-step playbook for developers who want to type code faster — without sacrificing accuracy.

1. Measure a real baseline

You can't improve what you don't measure. Run a few clean sessions and record WPM, accuracy and consistency together — a fast-but-sloppy run is slower than it looks once you count backspaces.

Take the speed test

2. Fix technique before speed

Anchor to the home row, use both shift keys, and keep your eyes on the screen. Proper 10-finger technique is the ceiling-raiser; speed without it plateaus fast.

Start with beginner drills

3. Drill your weak keys

After each session, the heatmap shows exactly which keys cost you accuracy. Symbols, the number row and off-hand capitals are the usual culprits for developers.

Practice real code

4. Make it a daily habit

Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Attach practice to an existing routine and let the compounding do the work.

FAQ

How long until I type faster?

Most people see measurable gains in two to four weeks of short daily practice. Symbol-heavy code typing takes two to three months to feel natural.

Should I focus on speed or accuracy?

Accuracy first. Errors cost detection plus correction time. Train to ~97%+ accuracy, then let speed rise.

Does typing speed actually help developers?

It removes friction between thought and screen, which helps you stay in flow. It won't fix slow thinking, but it stops the keyboard from being the bottleneck.
