What consistency measures
WPM tells you how much you typed. Consistency tells you how evenly. We time the gap between each pair of consecutive keystrokes and measure how much those gaps vary — a steady typist produces intervals clustered tightly around an average, while a bursty one produces a wide spread.
Two people with identical WPM can type entirely differently. One maintains a near-metronomic rhythm; the other sprints through familiar words and stalls on hard ones. The scores match, but the second typist is doing something less sustainable.
How the number is produced
We compute the coefficient of variation of your keystroke intervals — the standard deviation divided by the mean — and report 100 times one minus that figure, clamped to a range of 0 to 100.
Using the coefficient of variation rather than raw standard deviation matters, because it is scale-independent. A fast typist and a slow typist can both score 90; the metric asks how even your rhythm is relative to your own pace, not whether that pace is quick.
Why it predicts progress
Low consistency at a given speed usually means your speed is coming from bursts on familiar sequences rather than from uniform technique. Those bursts have a hard ceiling, because the pauses between them are where the time actually goes.
High consistency means your technique is even across the whole passage — and evenness is what scales. When a steady typist speeds up, everything speeds up together. When a bursty typist tries, the bursts get faster and the stalls stay exactly where they were.
Training a smoother rhythm
Deliberately type at a constant pace, slower than your maximum, aiming for an even beat rather than a fast one. Some people find it helps to type to a metronome or to a steady piece of music.
Then find what causes your stalls. It is usually specific characters rather than general fatigue, and the heatmap will name them. Drilling those keys removes the pauses, and removing the pauses raises the average far more reliably than trying to type the easy parts faster.
What actually produces a low score
Three things dominate. Specific characters you hesitate before — usually symbols or the number row. Word-boundary pauses, where you read ahead rather than typing continuously. And correction bursts, where an error stops you dead and then you sprint to catch up.
Each has a different fix, which is why the number alone is not actionable. Pair it with the heatmap: if your weak keys are also where you pause, that is the first problem to solve.
Training smoothness rather than speed
Set a pace you can hold for the whole passage and stay there, deliberately, even where the text is easy. Resisting the urge to sprint through familiar words is most of the exercise, and it feels unproductive precisely because it is unfamiliar.
A rising consistency score at the same WPM is real progress even though the headline number has not moved. It means the time you were losing to pauses is being absorbed into the average, which is what makes the next speed increase stick.
