How Typing Tests Measure WPM and Accuracy

What WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and consistency actually mean, and how to read your results.

The formula is straightforward: correct characters divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed. Dividing by five converts characters into standardised 'words', a convention every serious typing test shares so that scores are comparable.

Note that only correct characters count toward WPM. Type 400 characters in a minute with 40 wrong and your net WPM is 72, not 80. This is deliberate — text you got wrong is text you would have to go back and fix.

Net WPM versus raw WPM

Raw WPM counts everything you typed, correct or not. Net WPM counts only what you got right. Both are shown because the gap between them is diagnostic.

A small gap means you are typing near your accurate ceiling. A large gap means you are pushing past it and paying for it in errors. If your raw is 95 and your net is 70, you are not a 95 WPM typist typing carelessly — you are a 70 WPM typist whose speed is being wasted.

How accuracy is counted

Accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes. Crucially it counts keystrokes rather than final characters, so an error you noticed and corrected still counts against you.

That is intentional. The point of the metric is how often your fingers hit the right key, not whether you cleaned up afterward. A typist who makes many errors and fixes them all produces the same finished text as one who makes none, but they are much slower getting there.

Consistency, the metric most tests skip

Consistency measures how even your rhythm is. We record the interval between every pair of consecutive keystrokes, then compute the coefficient of variation — the standard deviation divided by the mean. Consistency is reported as 100 times one minus that value.

In plain terms: 100 means perfectly metronomic, and lower numbers mean burstier typing with more pauses. Two people can share a WPM score while typing completely differently — one steady, the other sprinting between hesitations. The steady typist almost always has more room to improve, because their speed comes from technique rather than from bursts.

Why your score moves between attempts

Expect natural variation of 10 to 15 percent. Text difficulty matters most: passages heavy in symbols or unusual letter pairs will always score lower than common prose, which is why comparing a code run against a word run tells you nothing.

Physical state matters too — warm hands, sleep and caffeine all show up in the numbers. Judge progress by your average across several sessions, never by a single personal best. Your best score is a measure of your luckiest day, not your ability.

Why two tests disagree about your speed

Different sites score the same typing differently, and the differences are rarely explained. Some count only completed words, some count characters. Some stop the clock on the last keystroke, some on a submit. Some penalise an uncorrected error once; others treat every subsequent character as wrong.

Passage difficulty matters even more. Common English words score far higher than technical prose, which scores higher than code. A twenty-point difference between two sites usually says nothing about you and everything about their text.

What a test should actually show you

A score alone is a scoreboard, not a diagnosis. To improve, you need to know where the time went — which keys you missed, whether you were even or bursty, whether errors clustered at the start while you settled or at the end as you tired.

That is the argument for per-key error data and a consistency figure alongside the headline number. WPM tells you where you are; the other two tell you what to do next, which is the only part practice can act on.

Why is my accuracy low when I corrected all my mistakes?

Accuracy counts keystrokes, not the final text. An error you noticed and backspaced still happened, and it still cost you the time to detect and fix it. The metric measures how reliably your fingers hit the right key.

What does the consistency score mean?

It is derived from the variation in time between your keystrokes — specifically, 100 minus the coefficient of variation, expressed as a percentage. A high score means an even rhythm; a low score means bursts separated by pauses.

Why is my code score so much lower than my word score?

Code is dense with symbols, capitals mid-word and number-row reaches, all of which sit outside the comfortable letter zone. The gap is expected. Compare code runs against other code runs.
